Why is a Court Appearance Important?

A court appearance is important because it is a chance to plead your case in front of a judge who will ultimately decide the outcome of your case.

Lawyers and judges may have a bias: It’s uncommon for defendants to defend their case without a lawyer. As such, a judge, prosecutor and jury may develop a bias. Although bias is prohibited in the court system, you must remember that they are human and may perceive your self-representation as carelessness.

An attorney knows how to present their clients to the judge and the court in such a way that they can earn the sympathy of the court, especially if the client is wrongly accused of the crime. Lawyers have experience in these cases so they know what to say (and what not to say) to help your case.

Will I Have to Also Appear in Court?

No, with an experienced attorney representing you in an expungement or record sealing case, 9 times out of 10 you will not need to appear. That being said, there is nothing preventing you from representing yourself in any court proceeding. But having an attorney navigate the complexities of court procedure and lending credibility to your argument will always work in your favor.
